The year 2022 wraps up for defunenseble with our very own festival, d(XII)e! As per usual, the program is a cross section of the most interesting electroacoustic art music at the moment, this time focusing in Finnish works. We've included six premiers, some second hearings and old favourites. The four short gigs can be combined as you please or attended as a whole for the full picture.
Defunensemble visits the nostalgic Kalliosali for the first time. We welcome you all to join us inside these historical walls for some of the most interesting music of our times!

defunensemble: Ko(o)dit
This work by Tapani Rinne and Tuomas Norvio comprises six sections, each based on its own set of codes. The final result is realised during the performance, where the composed material gains its ultimate form from the musician’s own personal interpretation, accompanied by simultaneously machine-generated processes. The generated composition codes change their form and continue onward – in a new direction.

defunensemble
The Musica nova Helsinki concert by the defunensemble will showcase recent electroacoustic music of international and Finnish origin and culminate in a premiere of Islaja’s works arranged for defun.
Despite its title, there are no words in Honeyed Words by up-coming British composer Anna Meredith. Instead, this piece for electronics and cello generates dialogue between “classical” and electronic music, the instruments and the notes themselves. Australia is the home of both Matthew Shlomowitz and, nowadays, Finnish-born Erkki Veltheim. The work by the latter, to be premiered at this concert, likens the search for a new idiom to the process of learning a language. The concert ends with some works by Islaja, one of Finland’s most distinctive singer-songwriter and now adopting a more electronic mode of expression in her latest SUU release, in arrangements for defun.

Does God command us to kill? The themes involved in Autuus (Bliss) include religious violence, the relationship between an individual and a community, marginalisation and the frailty of the mind. The background for the work is a true story from Kangaslampi, Finland in the spring of 1881, when Chaplain Woldemar Hofström murdered his brother with a mallet.
The events in the work progress on several time lines, and the work is also musically and visually multi-layered. The overall audio production is the compilation of video material, along with soloists, a choir and a band on the stage.
The work was jointly commissioned from composer Antti Auvinen by defunensemble and the Helsinki Chamber Choir. The stage performance is directed by Teemu Mäki. This work is being premiered at the Helsinki Festival.

ZONE - defunensemble & koelse @ pixelache festival
For Pixelache Helsinki 2011, defunensemble and KOELSE will build ZONE,
an audiovisual experience in which compositions overlap with
improvisations, traditional instruments meet electronic noise machines
and video projections merge with the soundscape in the space. It is
not a concert, not an installation, it is a unique three dimensional
experience which you will have to experience yourself.
